Brute Squad Wins Boston Invite

IMG_3947Brute Squad opened the 2014 season with an early championship against some of the top teams from the Northeast and Canada at Boston Invite.

Held on June 21st and 22nd in Devens, MA, Brute faced a mix of early-season U.S. club teams and a few Canadian teams preparing to compete at the WFDF Club Championships in August.

Brute began the tournament coming out strong in pool play, going 3-0 against Vintage (15-5), Godiva (15-6), and HOPE (15-2). Highlights of pool play included a no-turn first half in the first game.

Saturday’s play ended with a 9-15 loss in the crossover pre-quarters game against Quebec City’s QUB. Regrouping after the loss, we called it our first wake up call of the season, and learned the dangers of coming out flat. A great lesson to learn early and a milestone to build off of for our season.

Sunday morning we returned to the fields for quarters refocused and ready to go. Philly-based Green Means Go came out with fire, playing aggressive and hungry, taking the first 2 points. Brute quickly stepped it up and answered back to take half, 8-4, and end the game 15-6.

Next, Brute faced Bent in the semis, and continued the aggressive defense with huge blocks from Sara Jacobi, Liên Hoffman, and Kami Groom. The O line found some pretty flow against the 1-3-3 transition D Bent threw, with some pinpoint hucks from Leila Tunnell. The D line was quick to capitalize on breaks. Brute ended the game 15-6.

The finals saw a rematch between Brute Squad and QUB. Hungry for revenge, we came out strong, matched in turn by QUB’s intense energy and excitement. Brute scored first off a break, and QUB answered back to tie it 1-1. The rest of the first half saw offensive points traded between Boston and Quebec until Brute took half 8-7 on a throw from Hoffman to Laura Bitterman.

Brute came out of half fired up and scored another break on a huck from Shira Klane to Jacobi. Shortly after, Mia Greenwald contributed one of the major highlights of the tournament with a dominant sky in a sea of contesting players. Pumped up from these plays, we pressed on to take the title of Boston Invite Champs, 15-11.
